What do you think of when you hear people talking about Yoga?
Quite probably people in strange poses, probably listening to unusual music, maybe in a state of trance? If so there are some little bits of truth in there, but there is much more to understanding just what is Yoga.
Yoga is a collection of traditional Indian knowledge about the body systems and is rooted deep in India’s history. In the Indian language, Sanskrit, the word for "Yoga" is "yuj" and it means "to integrate or unify." So Yoga then is about the union of a person's own consciousness and the universal consciousness.
The masters of this art, the ancient Yogis believed that for a human to be in harmony with themselves and the wider environment, they must integrate and unify the body, mind, and spirit. But to achieve this integration, emotion, action, and intelligence must be brought into balance. The Yogis formulated ways to achieve and maintain this state of balance through Exercise, Breathing, and Meditation - the three main structures of Yoga.
Yoga teaches usto treat our bodies with care and respect, and to recognise it is the primary instrument in our work and growth.
Exercises in Yoga improve circulation, stimulate the abdominal organs, and put pressure on the glandular system of the body, which can generally result to better health.
Breathing techniques were developed based on the concept that breath is the source of life. In Yoga, students gain breathing control as they slowly increase their breathing. By focusing on their breathing, they prepare their minds for the next step - Meditation.
Meditation is not letting your mind go blank or about chanting. It is a series of techniques to help bring the activities of our busy racing minds into a calmer focus, resulting in a 'quiet' mind.
By designing physical poses and Breathing techniques that develop awareness of our body, Yoga helps us focus and relieves us from our everyday stress.
